Argentina’s bedeviled pact with Iran

LIMA, Peru — Nearly two decades after the bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Latin America’s deadliest terrorist atrocity is roiling Argentina once again.

Eighty-five people were killed and hundreds injured in the 1994 attack, when a van loaded with 600 pounds of fertilizer detonated in front of the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Society (AMIA by its Spanish initials).

Prosecutors long ago blamed Iran. At 200,000, Argentina’s Jewish community is the largest in Latin America and the region’s most obvious target for anti-Jewish terrorism.

Yet Tehran denies any involvement and refuses to allow investigators to interrogate suspected members of its security services — including Ahmad Vahidi, currently Iran’s defense minister.

Now, despite the impasse, the latest effort by Argentina President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to get to the bottom of the mass murder mystery has triggered widespread outrage.

AMIA: Israel ‘surprised’ by Argentina-Iran deal

Israel’s Foreign Ministry communicated to be “surprised” by the deal signed between Argentina and Iran to establish an independent international “truth commission” in the investigation of the 1994 AMIA terrorist attack.

“We were surprised by the news”, the Ministry’s spokesman Yigal Palmor told reporters and added: “”We are waiting for Argentina to send us all the details since the case is directly related to Israel.”

Following months of negotiations, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced on Facebook yesterday that an agreement had been reached with Iran to establish an independent international “truth commission” in the investigation of the bombing attack that killed 85 people in Buenos Aires.

The President published a document that was signed by Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi Salehi in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which proposes the creation of a “truth commission” that will be led by an independent jurist from neither country who has ... Israel: Chávez ayuda a Irán a construir bomba nuclear

Venezuela juega un papel cada vez más importante en las aspiraciones iraníes de construir una bomba nuclear, ayudándolo a evadir las sanciones internacionales, conseguir tecnología militar y maniobrando a su favor en el campo diplomático, indicó el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Israel.

En declaraciones brindadas por escrito a El Nuevo Herald, el portavoz de la cancillería israelí, Yigal Palmor, comentó sobre la cada vez mayor interacción entre el régimen de Mahmud Ahmadineyad y el de Hugo Chávez en Caracas, señalando que la relación se está convirtiendo en una crucial alianza para Teherán.

Palmor dejó en claro que hasta el momento no hay evidencia de que Chávez esté financiando directamente el programa nuclear iraní.
