Ecuador’s ruling Alianza Pais party has selected former vice president Lenin Moreno as its candidate in next year’s election to succeed President Rafael Correa.
Mr. Moreno, 63 years old, accepted the nomination during a party convention over the weekend alongside Mr. Correa, who is barred from running in February’s presidential election. His running mate will be Jorge Glas, the current vice president.
At the convention, Mr. Moreno called for party unity to defeat the opposition, with polls showing most Ecuadoreans want a political change as the country’s oil-dependent economy is mired in a recession.
“We need to be united brothers,” Mr. Moreno said. “Because the path is tough, tough, tough.”
While still early, polls suggest Mr. Moreno is a strong candidate to win the election thanks to a splintered opposition. A July survey by pollster Cedatos showed Mr. Moreno leading a list of candidates with about 35% support. …
